Less than half have registeredGreat Bend Tribune Publisher Mary Hoisington has mailed letters to 830 schools that could be eligible to compete in the 76-county Sunflower Spelling Bee to be hosted by the Tribune on May 8, 2008. Only county champions from registered schools may advance to the Sunflower Bee, whose winner will advance to nationals.
“We have 180 schools (from 51 counties) in our area that are enrolled, or enrolled pending payment,” Hoisington said Friday. However, more registrations were coming in as she spoke, and she is expecting a flurry of registrations prior to the Oct. 15 deadline.
Barton County schools that have registered are Eisenhower, Jefferson, Lincoln, Park and Riley in Great Bend Unified School District 428, and Holy Family Catholic School in Great Bend.
No other Barton County schools are registered.
Schools in Edwards, Russell, Stafford and Rice counties have enrolled, but there were no registrations from Pawnee or Ellsworth counties as of Friday.
Registration is done online at www.spellingbee.com and payment may come from the school or a benefactor. Letters were sent to schools on the State of Kansas’ list of accredited schools.
Private schools, including home schools, may also register if they meet national guidelines.
“I hope that the kids aren’t deprived of the opportunity to participate because of the fee,” Hoisington said. The new fee is a national requirement, and not a rule initiated by the Tribune. |

Schools buzzing about bee rules By SUSAN THACKER

County spelling bees are still months away, but schools that want their champions to advance only have 15 days to register. New rules at the national level have most schools paying a $99 registration fee by Oct. 15. That’s confusing because, in past years, only the winners of county bees had to be registered. This will be the first year for the Great Bend Tribune to host a national qualifying bee, or, using the terminology of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, a “final local bee.” The winner of the Tribune’s Sunflower Spelling Bee on March 8, 2008, will advance to nationals. |
